School Leadership:
Getting all teachers on board is a concern. We have school leaders that will;
provide direction, models, and give assistance to own staff. Administartion has been excellent by
providing in-servicing, experience the use of programs in class, trouble-shooting, providing subs to cover PD's.

Challenges of school leadership
  • Making sure all teachers are on board. Providing PD, instructional resources to teachers. Finding the time for the leader to meet with all teachers in their schools.
Role of school leaders
  • Take information from team meeting to the teachers in the school. If there is no one to be the role model in the school, the teachers will not do this on their own. Teachers need a contact in their own school that is easily accessible. Leaders take an important role in developing this area on the school plan.

12.1 What are the challenges of school leadership related to implementation of LwICT in your division?
One challenge school leadership has is ensuring that the infrastructure and access to technology is always optimized for all grades and all students. School leaders need to make tough choices when making the school budget, and technology is an expensive and ongoing investment. Current questions include: What should the computers look like at all grade levels? What software is needed to meet the needs of each grade level? What training or professional development is needed for staff?
12.2 What is the role of school leaders regarding the implementation of LwICT in your division?
Our school leaders' role with Literacy with ICT is to provide support for the implementation plan. This means encouraging and supporting teachers to learn more. It also means providing financial support to have the funds for initiatives like SMART boards in the classrooms, wireless laptops in the classrooms, new software, and new hardware. School leaders also show support by providing professional development release time for teachers to meet and learn about literacy with ICT. School leaders also need to be aware of the learning continuum by attending professional development themselves so they can make informed decisions.

12.3 What steps are your school leaders taking to support teachers in advancing student literacy with ICT? 12.4 How is you division supporting and training your school leaders?
Our school leaders have helped teachers by providing professional development release time, team meeting times, and staff meeting time to allow teachers to learn about, discuss, and plan their literacy with ICT implementation. They have also supported the purchase of new equipment, software, and hardware like SMART boards and new laptops. School leaders also show support by visiting classes, asking students questions, and being aware of the projects and learning activities students are doing to support literacy with ICT.

For LwICT to be successfully implemented into schools, the school leaders need to provide moral support (include the topic on staff meeting agendas, promote the project with parents and community members, etc.), priorize financial support for the initiative, and monitor the overall progress of the implementation. Not all school leaders need to be "pilots".

In our division, one school leader is on the implementation team. All other school leaders are supporting the initiative.

Our school leaders allow teachers to be released for meetings, promote mentoring within their schools, and some will "sub" for teachers involved in professional learn ing activitgies.
